BALLWIN, Mo. – Police are investigating the cause of death after two bodies were discovered in a home Tuesday evening.

A mail carrier noticed mail piling up in a mailbox and called police to conduct a wellness check Tuesday afternoon. Ballwin Police discovered the bodies of a man and woman in the home on Sunnyslope Drive, just two miles from the police department.

The medical examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine identification and the causes of death due to the state of decomposition the bodies were in.

Police have not released information regarding the names or ages of those who died.

“They don’t believe there was any foul play exterior-wise,” Officer Mark Reckert from the Ballwin Police Department said. “They are not sure what actually happened due to the state of the bodies and how early on the investigation was; that’s why the medical examiner came out. They retrieved the bodies, and the medical examiner will be doing an investigation on their end.”

The news shocked the neighbors.

“It’s a quiet neighborhood,” Debbie Hames, neighbor, said. “We’ve lived here for 40 years and nothing like this has ever happened. It’s hard to accept that somebody had been in here and had passed away.”

Police said the bodies had been in the home for a while. It is still unclear how long the autopsy is expected to take.
