BELLEVILLE, Ill. – A woman is dead and a man is in custody following a shooting late Sunday morning in Belleville.

According to a Belleville Police Department spokesperson, officers were sent to a home in the first block of Ben Louis Drive, just south of Highway 161, for a domestic disturbance.

Officers found a woman and man inside the residence. The woman had been shot once and was unconscious. Officers and EMS were unable to revive the victim and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released, pending notification of family members.

The man was taken into custody. He’s not been identified, pending formal charges.
