MADISON COUNTY, Ill. – The Madison County Coroner’s Office has identified the woman who died in a crash Tuesday afternoon.

Just before 4 p.m., Meloyde Fagan, 69, was driving southbound on Interstate 255 just south of Fosterburg Road when her vehicle exited the road, traveled down a ditch, up a hill, and struck a tree.

Officials say it is unknown why her car left the highway. Fagan was pronounced dead at the scene. She was the only occupant.

A release states that preliminary evidence shows she died as a result of positional asphyxia, but it is not deemed the final result until toxicology tests come back.

Illinois State Police and the Madison County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate.
