ST. LOUIS – Fox 2 spoke with St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Wesley Bell after defeating incumbent Cori Bush in the Democratic primary for Missouri Congressional District 1 on Tuesday.
According to unofficial election results, with 100% of precincts reporting between St. Louis City and St. Louis County, Bell was backed by 51.16% of votes (51.16%) for MO Cong. District 1, while Bush was backed by 45.62% of votes (45.62%)
During the conversation, Bell spoke about the hard work he and his team put in to secure Tuesday’s win.
“This was a team effort,” Bell said. “Elected officials will tell you, we can take losing, but it’s harder to see the people working and to come up short, so when you win, it feels good and it feels good for those folks because so much blood, sweat and tears went into this win.”
As the conversation went on, Bell spoke about what he can do to gain the trust of those who didn’t vote for him and what’s next as he prepares for the upcoming election in November.
“I want to earn your support. If I didn’t get it last time, we need to work together,” Bell said. “I’m looking forward to working with all of our community, our elected officials, our stakeholders and partners to wake up this sleeping giant that we call Saint Louis.”
Currently, Andrew Jones and Stan Hall are leading the Republican nomination for Missouri U.S. District 1, though AP has not yet called that ticket. The winner would advance for an election versus Bell as the Democratic candidate this fall. Bell is considered a heavy favorite for a seat that was last occupied by a Republican in 1949.
District 1 covers all of St. Louis City and several cities in north and central St. Louis County.
