CLAYTON, Mo. – Washington University has acquired the campus of the soon-to-close Fontbonne University for $39 million.
A Fontbonne spokesperson confirms with FOX 2 that Washington University purchased the 16-acre campus for $39 million.
The St. Louis Business Journal and St. Louis Post-Dispatch report that the two universities agreed to a deal in March, though the sale was closed in June and the sale price was made public soon after.
Fontbonne’s campus is located at 6800 Wydown Boulevard in Clayton, within a few miles of WashU’s campus.
After many years of declining enrollment and budget cuts, Fontbonne announced in March that its board of trustees voted to cease operations. The university is planning to close after the 2025 summer session. Fontbonne did not admit freshman for the 2024-25 academic year, but will offer classes into 2025.
