ST. LOUIS – The United States Postal Service held a job fair Friday, seeking carriers in and around the city.
Trent Crull is a new resident of St. Louis with his wife. He was at the job fair in hopes of helping deliver mail to the city.
“I just know that (USPS is) struggling right now,” Crull said. “I need a job after the relocation so I felt like it would be a good service to the city of St. Louis.”
He was one of many at the Choteau post office in the Grove on Friday. Some were mailing letters; others were looking for work.
“(I) definitely need a career I can retire from and still have an income after I retire,” Calvin Gray Jr., job seeker, said. “I’m somewhat competitive but competitive enough in a mannerly nature. But I need to be able to retire.”
Many residents in the St. Louis area have reported slow and sporadic mail delivery within recent months. USPS admitted to a shortage of carriers in both the city and county.
“I’m a big fan of public service and also reaching back into the community,” Crull said. “I think it would be a vital role.”
Carriers are needed from Afton to West County. USPS is offering $22.13 per hour with benefits.
“I do want to be a mail carrier. I grew up in the city so to hear neighbors talking and complaining about not getting their mail delivered to them, it’s like, ‘Let me get out there and see if I can help,’” Jerrell Jones, job seeker, said.
For those who are on the lookout for a job, the postal service is looking for those willing to work 60 hours over six days a week to start.
