Two rounds of storms expected near St. Louis Thursday

ST. LOUIS — We have storms ongoing in northern Missouri and another line in southeast Kansas getting ready to push into western Missouri. As these two areas of storms merge, we could see some strong wind gusts and isolated hail in the severe thunderstorm watch area (to the west and north of St. Louis) as well as central Missouri.

Once these storms get to our area, probably around the 6 a.m. hour, some could still be strong. We can expect heavy rain, lightning, gusty winds and maybe some small hail. This first round of storms should depart the region by mid- to late morning.

How will this first round of thunderstorms impact this afternoon’s weather? While models show the atmosphere stabilizing behind these storms by late morning, the instability looks to come back in full force this afternoon. We’ll also have leftover outflow boundaries from this morning’s convection, which could further enhance our chances for severe weather.

Storms look to redevelop mid- to late afternoon and continue through the evening hours. All modes of severe weather will be possible. Storms look to exit the region by midnight, with maybe just a few lingering sprinkles.

Behind this dynamic system, we will be back to dry and much cooler on Friday. Highs won’t make it out of the 50s and we’ll see lingering cloud cover for much of the day. Saturday will be sunny and milder, with highs in the mid-60s. Another cold front comes through later Saturday and cools us down again for Sunday. Skies should stay mostly sunny but highs will be in the mid 50s.
