ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – Two women face criminal charges after they allegedly left three vulnerable adults locked in a hot car while shopping in St. Charles County.

The St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Niyah L. Brown and Alexis N. Daggs with three counts each of abuse of an elderly, disabled or vulnerable person amid the investigation.

According to court documents obtained by FOX 2, the victims were described as elderly people with special needs and “unable to communicate verbally.”

Court documents allege that three victims were left in a car on Aug. 29 at an undisclosed business parking lot in St. Charles County. Officers initially responded to a wellness check in the parking lot after a passerby observed the victims within the vehicle.

By the time police arrived, investigators say it was 96 degrees outside and the victims were “profusely sweating.” After several attempts to open the vehicle, it remained locked. The passerby went into a nearby store and requested an announcement to find the car’s owner.

Later on, Brown and Daggs returned to the scene. They told police they were responsible for the adults in the car. They also claimed they left the vehicle running and were inside stores for 15 minutes, per court documents. Investigators say, however, the two were gone from the vehicle for at least 40 minutes and did not leave the engine running.

Brown and Daggs were both booked into jail on a $50,000 bond and ordered against any contact with the victims, according to online Missouri court records.
