ST. LOUIS – A teenager is appearing in St. Louis Circuit Court on Thursday afternoon after being charged with a drive-by shooting that left one woman with a brain injury.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the shooting happened around 3 a.m. on June 23 in the 1500 block of South Jefferson Avenue, which is located on the dividing line of the Gate District and Lafayette Square neighborhoods.

Police said two women were wounded after the SUV they were riding in was shot at and then struck a light pole.

The 49-year-old driver suffered a gunshot wound to her left temple. A 27-year-old was shot in the leg. A third woman in the car was not struck or injured.

Investigators eventually identified and arrested Deshawn L. Snider, 17, in connection with the shooting.

Police said Snider admitted to firing the shots, but claimed the gunfire was to celebrate his recent release from Family Court. However, investigators said surveillance video shows Snider aiming at the victims’ SUV while firing.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Snider with first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree property damage, and two counts of armed criminal action.

Snider is currently on active probation for vehicle tampering and fleeing arrest.
