FERGUSON, Mo. – Detectives with the St. Louis County Police Department’s Bureau of Crimes Against Persons are investigating a fatal house fire in Ferguson that claimed the lives of a mother and her four children, as well as three dogs, on Monday.

The fatal fire happened just before 4:30 a.m. in the 400 block of North Clay Avenue. Multiple fire crews could be seen battling flames lunging out of the second floor of a home. Thick, black smoke could be seen for miles.

The home was a total loss. Meanwhile, the victims’ neighbors are still in shock.

Late Monday afternoon, investigators described the fire as suspicious and said there was evidence of criminal activity. Detectives have applied for search warrants for the family’s van.

The grandfather of the four dead children told us a mother and her four children lived in the home. The kids were all under the age of 10, including 9-year-old twin girls.

Police have not released the names of the victims nor have they identified the cause of the fire.
