ST. LOUIS – The director of transportation for St. Louis Public Schools, Toyin Akinola, has reportedly stepped down from her position.

FOX 2’s news partners at the St. Louis Post Dispatch report that Akinola retired from the position, and many staff members found her departure as abrupt and unexpected. She left less than two months into the 2024-25 school year.

SLPS has been through challenges with its transportation plans for much of the school year, stemming from a driver shortage, and services dropped from various bus providers since the end of the last school year.

At the start of the school year, hundreds of SLPS students took a MetroBus ride to school in wake of transportation challenges.

The sudden departure adds to some notable staff turnover of recent for St. Louis Public Schools, including the firing of Superintendent Keisha Scarlett last month.

FOX 2’s efforts to reach St. Louis Public Schools for comment were unsuccessful upon publication of this report.
