St. Louis native Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett campaigns at home

ST. LOUIS – We’re not seeing much of the top presidential candidates around the St. Louis area this campaign season, but one of Vice President Kamala Harris’ top lieutenants was in town Wednesday.

It was part campaign, part homecoming.

Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, of Dallas, Texas, became nationally known after her clash with Republican Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Crockett has been traveling the country, putting her political fame to use, but there was also another reason why she returned to her hometown of St. Louis.

She joined her fellow former schoolmate, Missouri State Sen. Brian Williams, in a return to Jefferson Elementary in the Normandy School District. She also worked in a campaign rally in East St. Louis for Democrat Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski.

In May, Congresswoman Greene hurled an insult at Crockett about her false eyelashes during an Oversight Committee meeting. Crockett’s fiery response, insulting Greene’s hair and body type, went viral.

“That particular interaction really kind of evidenced what a lot of people have been looking for: someone to knock the bully down. It’s sad that we see so much bullying in politics nowadays,” Crockett said.

She’s risen to National Campaign Co-Chair for Vice President Harris from the hallways of Jefferson Elementary.

Sen. Williams said there was certainly a lesson there.

“We really wanted young people to know if you can see it, you can be it,” he said. “We had young people talking about being members of law enforcement, protecting our community.  Third graders, fifth graders, talking about how they can give back to their community at such a young age—it’s nothing short of inspiring. There’s nothing partisan about that.”

Crockett added, “At the end of the day, this is about us. This is about our future because no matter what happens in this election, Kamala Harris is going to be OK as an individual, but will we be OK as a country?”

This homecoming was much more than a trip down memory lane.
