ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones wants to turn the former Workhouse jail site into one that offers tiny homes for struggling residents.

The former medium-security prison has been empty since June 2022.

According to our news partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a panel commissioned to study the idea said the site’s history, environmental issues, and location would prevent anyone from living there.

But Mayor Jones says she’s looking into solutions for those concerns. The city already helps pay for 100 tiny homes that provide temporary shelter northwest of downtown. She says they attract less opposition from neighbors than traditional shelters.

FOX 2 learned of various safety concerns last year as the jail remained closed, but public safety officials are mulling future plans for the site.
