ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man was sentenced Monday for the 2022 fatal shooting of his girlfriend’s brother.

The shooting happened on the evening of May 7, 2022, in the 5200 block of Ridge Avenue in the city’s Academy neighborhood.

Jalen Jarret, 31, and his romantic partner were arguing over car keys when the woman’s brother, Tyron Madison, approached them. Police and prosecutors said Jarret shot Madison several times and ran away from the scene.

Madison was taken to a hospital, where he later died. He was 30.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office initially charged Jarret with second-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action.

Jarret was slated to stand trial this week. However, he reached a plea agreement with city prosecutors.

Jarret pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and second-degree assault.

A circuit court judge sentenced Jarret to 10 years for voluntary manslaughter and seven years for the assault charge. They will be served consecutively.

Jarret will receive credit for a year and eight months of time served.
