St. Louis man charged in murder of his girlfriend

ST. LOUIS – A St. Louis man is behind bars and accused in the death of his girlfriend earlier this month.

Prosecutors with the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office have charged Derrick Armond Smith, 40, with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm amid the investigation.

Smith allegedly shot his girlfriend at a home in the 5000 block of Alaska Avenue, located in St. Louis’ Dutchtown neighborhood, on July 19.

According to a probable cause statement, the victim was shot in the head and police seized a gun suspected in the shooting. Court documents did not indicate any potential motives in the death.

Smith was booked into jail without bond and has a detention hearing scheduled for July 29, according to Missouri court records.
