OLIVETTE, Mo. — The Animal Protective Association (APA) in St. Louis County is facing an unprecedented challenge after taking in 150 cats from a single hoarding situation. This influx has pushed the total number of cats in their care to approximately 250, far exceeding their usual capacity of around 50 cats.

Sarah, a representative from the APA, reported that the organization is struggling to accommodate the sudden increase. They have been forced to convert dog spaces into cat areas and are relying heavily on community support to manage the situation.

“We’ve been extremely busy,” Sarah stated. “Our team is really doing whatever is needed to make sure these cats have everything they need.”

The APA, which typically helps about 6,000 animals find homes annually, has never before dealt with a hoarding situation of this magnitude. The organization is working closely with Saint Louis County, which is allowing them to be put up for adoption.

Community response has been strong, with local businesses and people donating supplies and volunteering their time. Purina and other local partners have stepped up to provide necessary resources. The APA is also collaborating with rescue partners who have committed to taking in some of the animals once they are cleared for adoption.

Despite the challenges, the APA remains committed to its open admission policy and continues to accept animals from Saint Louis County as part of their regular services. The organization is calling for continued community support through adoptions, fostering, volunteering, and donations to help manage this extraordinary situation.

For those interested in helping, more information can be found on the APA’s website. Learn more by going to APA.org or calling (314)645-4610.
