ST. LOUIS – The City of St. Louis says eminent domain proceedings are underway for nearly 80 properties in north city neighborhoods.

Those properties are located near the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency building, a large-scale government facility expected to open in 2025.

Many of those properties are also owned by Paul McKee’s NorthSide Registration Project, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and St. Louis Business Journal. The project has faced significant delays in recent years.

The St. Louis Development Corp. has sent 60-day notices to the property owners and could file petitions two months after those notices if the City of St. Louis can’t reach deals with property owners.

The push for eminent domain comes as the city aims to address vacant properties. During a recent community conference on the issue, St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones expressed the need to hold owners accountable if they leave properties vacant without adequate care.

The city is also moving forward with an eminent domain petition in hopes to acquire the abandoned Railway Exchange building downtown.
