ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – St. Charles County’s beloved K-9 officer Bonnie received a heartwarming sendoff Friday as a big crowd turned out to celebrate her retirement.

Bonnie is ready to enjoy a more relaxed dog’s life. Ahead are walks outside, naps in the sun, head scratches and treats for a well-deserved retirement.

Before that, she took one last lap around the building for her school resource officer.

“This is her retirement day,” said St. Charles County Detective Brigid Oldani. “She’s been in service for eight and a half years with the St. Charles County Police Department. For most of her years, she was involved in cyber crimes. But last year we transitioned into schools.”

On Friday, her last day at Becky-David Elementary School, a large group of students, teachers and St. Charles County law enforcement gathered to wish a fond adieu.

“I know how much they love her,” said Oldani. “A lot of these kids depend on her every day. It’s been tough. She still gets to come home with me and retire and be my pet and continue to be part of my family. But you know as K-9 officers, you spend more time with your K-9 officer than you do with your family.”

Change is inevitable for all of us, but Oldani won’t be losing her partner. Bonnie will transition to a new leisurely way of life, still living with her mentor.

“Her new duties will be to hang out, sleep late, and not get too spoiled and hopefully not gain too much weight,” said Oldani.

Fortunately for Oldani, she’s getting a new partner. A six-month old K-9 on the way.
