Spring blooming pothole issue which costs drivers big

ST. LOUIS — While spring brings its warmer temperatures and fresh blooms, there’s an underlying seemingly unavoidable nuisance as well.

After months of bitter cold temperatures, salt and snow potholes start to emerge.

For downtown resident Sidney Caldwell, it’s a problem he knows all too well. In the last few weeks, he’s hit three separate potholes with three separate cars.

“When I wake up in the morning, I’m having a rough drive,” Caldwell explained.

He already had one car repaired for $1,300 and was quoted another $1,200 for another car. He hit the most recent pothole Wednesday night along Hebert St. in north Saint Louis City.

“I don’t want to have to get them fixed and then go back to the same problem because there’s potholes everywhere,” Caldwell told Fox 2 Thursday.

Jason Stumpf with Complete Auto Body and Repair told Fox 2 it’s a seasonal problem.

“Roads get beat up during the winter,” Stumpf said. “We’ve definitely seen an increase in drivers coming in with pothole damage this last month.”

Caldwell said he’s filed a complaint with the city’s street division and a claim with his car’s insurance. Now he’s playing the waiting game, hoping no one deals with the same headache.

“There’s no telling who’s going to hit this pothole; maybe another car will hit it tonight,” Cladwell said.
