ST. LOUIS — The grief experienced after losing a pet can be comparable to losing a person. May is Mental Health Awareness Month and National Pet Month, making it an ideal time to talk about supportive workplace policies regarding pet loss.

Erika Sinner author of “Pets Are Family,” shares her personal experience of losing her dog Kingston, which deepened her understanding of pet grief and the stigma associated with it. This personal loss motivated her to advocate for workplace benefits like pet bereavement leave. She notes the financial and emotional advantages for companies that offer such benefits, including improved employee retention rates, which can significantly reduce the costs associated with high turnover.
