Investigators say the Brooklyn officer was pursuing a black Jeep Patriot that was reported to be stolen in Illinois. The officer followed the suspect vehicle on I-70 into St. Louis city limits.

At some point, on I-70 near the Shreve Avenue exit, an occupant in the Jeep emerged from the sunroof and fired shots at the officer’s vehicle. The officer avoided the shots and quickly took the exit onto Shreve Avenue as the Jeep continued on the interstate.

Police say multiple shell casings were recovered along the interstate near the reported scene of gunfire. The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department says an investigation is ongoing.
