ST. LOUIS – Crews are now demolishing a row of vacant houses along Kingshighway Boulevard in St. Louis to make way for a new development.

Demolition began Monday for a stretch of seven buildings along South Kingshighway Boulevard and Oakland Avenue, just south of Interstate 64.

According to our news partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a Kansas City-based group called Northpoint Development purchased the buildings.

The company plans to build two apartment buildings in the St. Louis area. That includes on the grounds of the current demolition and another on vacant land between Choteau and Gibson avenues. The two buildings will cost around $120 million and offer hundreds of new apartments.

The Post-Dispatch also reports that St. Louis officials once strived to preserve the homes, but they are coming down after they were determined to be a threat to public safety.
