JENNNINGS, Mo. – Jennings’ narrow streets are ill-suited for high speeds. But residents of Wilborn Drive told us that hasn’t slowed down many vehicles in the area.

Vanessa Ford, 71, was killed overnight in a hit-and-run in the 5300 block of Wilborn Drive. St. Louis County police officers responded to a call for service just before 1 a.m.

“I just happened to come out of the house. I looked out and saw all these people around her and I didn’t really know what’s going on,” said Jerry Simpson Jr., who lives nearby. “I thought she might’ve just fallen or something but come to find out it was a hit-and-run. And it’s a shame; it’s really a shame.”

Ford was transported to an area hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries.

According to police, she was walking on Wilborn Drive when a car struck her and fled the scene. Ford’s sister informed FOX 2 that Ford was with another male when the car struck her as they were walking over her groceries. Her grocery cart remained upright and nothing was in disarray, leading the family to believe this was deliberate.

Ford’s friend was unable to get a description of the suspected car because he was too worried about his friend being hurt. Ford was known around the neighborhood as a socialite of the area, always chatting and visiting with friends and family, and even helped one of her neighbors move into their home out of the kindness of her heart.

A neighbor’s Ring camera was recording during the incident but didn’t pick up anything. The family is hoping cameras from a nearby senior living center will aid in the search.

Ford’s sister shared that she doesn’t know what to do at the moment. She feels like she’s stagnated waiting for answers. She said every time she closes her eyes, all she sees is her sister laying on the street.

The investigation is ongoing, and the family is urging whoever has any additional details to come forward. Please contact the St. Louis County Police Department at 636-529-8210 to speak with investigators if you have any information regarding this incident.
