JUPITER, Fla. – The St. Louis Cardinals loaded up on veterans ahead of the 2024 season, and it seems yet another one will join the fold.
The Cardinals are planning to sign longtime San Francisco Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford in the near future.
The Cardinals have not yet disclosed the move as of Monday afternoon, but sources told The Athletic’s Cardinals beat writer Katie Woo that Crawford is signing with St. Louis.
Crawford is a two-time World Series champion (2012 and 2014), a three-time All Star and a four-time Gold Glove award winner at shortstop. Before becoming a free agent this offseason, Crawford spent 13 seasons with the Giants.
The pending move comes days after Cardinals lead starting shortstop candidate Masyn Winn dealt with tightness and missed batting practice. Winn had a strong spring game debut Sunday with a three-hit game, though Crawford offers a little more reassurance in the case Winn might miss time due to injury or need rest.
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reported Monday that Crawford could explore new opportunities after the Giants signed Nick Ahmed to presumably take on more shortstop duties.
Crawford has nearly 1,400 hits and 150 home runs over his MLB career.
