(NewsNation) — A variety of candy products sold in 17 states are now part of a Class I recall, indicating the highest risk level, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The Iowa-based Palmer Candy Company initially issued a voluntary recall for several white-coated confectionary items back in May due to possible salmonella contamination.

On August 6, the FDA upgraded the recall to a Class I level. This is “the most severe type of FDA recall” because there is a risk of “serious injury or death,” the agency noted on its website.

However, there have been no reported illnesses or deaths related to the recall to date.

The affected products include Palmer Candy’s Munchy Medley, Classic Yogurt Pretzels, Caramel Swirl Pretzel, Zebra Fudge Cookies, Frosted Pretzels, Patriotic Pretzels, among others.

The products were sold at Walmart, Target, Dollar General and HyVee in Alabama, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

Salmonella can cause fever, stomach pains and/or diarrhea. It is the most common form of food poisoning. It mostly lasts for four to seven days, according to the CDC.
