Police pursuit leaves two dead, one injured from self-inflicted wound

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – Two people are dead and one injured after a car crash on Bond Avenue in East St. Louis Friday afternoon, according to Illinois State Police.

Around 2:20 p.m., a Cahokia Heights police officer saw a vehicle driving at high speeds and as the officer tried to initiate a traffic stop, the car started traveling in the opposite direction.

The vehicle hit another car as it was turning left into a driveway, striking the driver’s side. Both the driver and passenger in the car were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver then attempted to flee.

During foot pursuit, the police officer saw the driver pull out a firearm and accidentally suffer from an unintentional, self-inflicted gunshot wound. They were taken to a local hospital with injuries.

The investigation is open and ongoing.
