FERGUSON, Mo. – The community came together Tuesday evening for a powerful night, holding a vigil for Ferguson Police Officer Travis Brown, who suffered a head injury during a protest last week.

Chief Troy Doyle says he felt a change at the vigil and believes the community is ready to heal.

More than 100 residents, first responders, and clergy members prayed together for Brown’s fast recovery. The Ferguson police officer was injured when he tried to arrest a protester Friday night during a demonstration outside the department.

“I saw the video for the first time today. It was hard to watch—I did tear up,” Ferguson resident Lamika Covington said. “It’s hard to see what happened and him lying there afterwards.”

Video released Tuesday by the Ferguson Police Department shows the moments leading up to Brown being knocked to the ground by protestor Elijah Gnatt.

“We’re praying for him. He’s got the community of Ferguson, all the citizens behind him, and we just want him to make a speedy and full recovery,” resident Maureen Pegg said.

Local leaders say the community is rallying together.

“The important thing is, people want to get unified, they want things to happen, they want all this nonsense to stop and move forward,” Ferguson Police Chaplain Rev. José Aguayo said.

Chief Doyle says he feels Tuesday night’s vigil can be the start of a new day in Ferguson.

“I honestly think that this could be the day that can start a renewal. Not only here in Ferguson, but across our nation,” he said. “Let’s do what’s right. There’s always going to be disagreements, but let’s come together.”
