One Independence officer killed, two hurt in shooting

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Independence police say three officers and a civil process server were shot on Thursday at a residence in the area of N. Elsea Smith Road and E. Bundschu Road, and one of the officers died.

One of the officers is in surgery, the status of the third officer is unknown. Sources tell FOX4 the process server is in critical condition.

The shooting location is just south of N. Elsea Smith’s intersection with 24 Highway. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says it’s assisting and the call for service went out just before 1 p.m.

The Fort Osage School District says its schools were on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, but the lockdown has been lifted.

Neighbors in the area tell FOX4 they’ve seen armored vehicles and helicopters in the area, but haven’t been given any other details.
