One dead, one hurt after Jefferson County highway crash

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – One man has died and another man is hurt after a crash Friday morning in Jefferson County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

MSHP identified the victim who died as James M. Nelson, 40, of Barnhart, Missouri. A passenger, also a 40-year-old man, was also hurt in the crash.

The crash happened around 1:45 a.m. Friday in the northbound lanes of U.S. Route 67 near Interstate 55.

A MSHP crash report states that Nelson was driving in one lane of the highway as an approaching driver was traveling in a neighboring lane. At some point, Nelson crossed a center line and struck the left side of the approaching vehicle.

Upon impact, Nelson’s vehicle then crossed over lanes and struck a concrete barrier. Nelson was rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. His passenger was also hospitalized and is being treated for moderate injuries.

MSHP Troop C, which covers much of the St. Louis region, is investigating the crash.
