ST. LOUIS — A somber walk will reflect on a horrific day in our nation’s history. On this day in 1917, tens of thousands of people lined the streets of New York City to protest a massacre that happened in East St. Louis.

Hundreds of people died, homes were set on fire, shots were fired, and people were beaten. This all followed a workers’ strike, leading to investigations and widespread outrage soon after. Thousands of people lined the streets of New York City in a silent protest.

Robin Carey Boyd, the NAACP president of the East St. Louis branch, said they are going to pay tribute to Sonya Massey today. She was a 36-year-old woman shot and killed by police in her home in Illinois earlier this month.

The march is set to start at 2 p.m. this afternoon. It will begin at Morningstar Church on State Street and conclude at the Clyde C. Jordan Senior Center, just under a mile away. Participants are asked to dress in all white.
