EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. — A growing number of Madison County cities are banning homeless camps on public property. Godfrey and Granite City passed ordinances last week. Wood River and Alton previously passed bans.
The newly approved ordinances set rules for public space usage, seeking a balance between supporting those in need and ensuring public areas remain accessible and well-maintained.
“In conjunction with our neighboring communities, the Village of Godfrey has adopted an ordinance that is in the best interest of public safety, public health and the general welfare of our residents and visitors,” states Godfrey Mayor Michael McCormick.
Wood River Mayor Tom Stalcup states, “I appreciate the efforts of Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine for keeping the interests of the entire county in mind. It is in the best interest of public safety, public health, and the quality of life for all the citizens of our city.”
Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine is advocating for all county communities to adopt similar regulations and is collaborating with the Madison County Board to pass an ordinance for the county’s unincorporated areas. The aim is to create a consistent strategy across the county, avoiding a disjointed mix of regulations.
