ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. – Students begin returning to class on August 19 in several area districts, and of course they’ll need school supplies.

The tax-free weekend is a great opportunity to save on essential items for the upcoming school year.

This year, the tax-free weekend runs from Friday, August 2 through Sunday, August 4 and it’s a perfect time for parents and students to stock up on supplies.

In Missouri, the tax-free exemption covers a variety of items: clothes and shoes with a taxable value under $100, school supplies totaling up to $50 per purchase, and computers priced under $1,500.

The sales tax holiday applies to state and local sales taxes. A state law went into effect last year that prevents cities, counties and special tax districts from charging local sales tax on qualifying items. Previously, cities could choose whether to participate.

You will still feel the effects of inflation when back-to-school shopping. According to the National Retail Federation, the average U.S. household is expected to spend about $875 on school supplies this year; that’s down slightly from last year’s record high of $890.

College students are expected to spend just under $1,400, which is comparable to last year’s record.

You can find a complete list of qualifying items on the Missouri Department of Revenue website under the taxation tab.

Illinois won’t have a tax holiday this year but you don’t have to live in Missouri to take advantage of the state’s sales tax holiday. You can cross the state lines to explore stores in South County Center, West County Center and Mid Rivers Mall, which are all having special promotions.
