ST. LOUIS — Punxsutawney Phil did not spot his shadow this year. The groundhog predicts an early 2024 spring and morel mushroom hunters are happy about that. They’re preparing for an early harvest.

A Facebook page named Missouri Morel Hunting has established itself as a good guide for people looking for the elusive treat. They post regular updates about soil temperatures and a map of mushroom sightings. An update posted this morning says that hunters should expect to see more news earlier this year.

“Good morning, shroomers!! Are you ready to kick off a new season??? From the looks of the current forecast, it appears we’re in for an earlier than expected morel hunting season. We will begin posting ground temps tomorrow morning in anticipation of our southern counties kicking things off for us.

As always, we’re excited to see what the season has in-store for us, and we can’t wait for you to show off your “finds”! It’s time to sharpen those knives, dust off those boots, and focus those eagle eyes! Morel season is almost here! ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ€๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ€ – Ron”

Missouri Morel Hunting

Morel mushroom hunting in Missouri typically takes place from late March through May. Hunters search for the elusive, tasty mushrooms in wooded areas, especially near certain dead or dying trees. The best time to hunt is after a warm, rainy period when daytime temperatures are in the 60s and nighttime temperatures stay above 40 degrees.
