Missouri HOAs lose authority over backyard chicken ownership under new law

MISSOURI – A new law going into effect at the end of August will prohibit home owner associations’ from restricting the ownership of chickens in Missouri neighborhoods.

The new Missouri law goes into effect on August 28 and will give homeowner’s the freedom to own chicken’s outside of an HOA’s jurisdiction.

According to the new law, the HOA must allow ownership of up to six chickens on a lot 2/10ths of an acre or larger.

The law also states they cannot prohibit single chicken coop structures that house up to six chickens.

Despite this, HOA’s do have the ability to adopt “reasonable rules,” such as prohibiting the ownership of roosters.
