WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. – New documents from the Missouri Attorney General claim that the Webster Groves School District’s sex education curriculum violated state laws.
Attorney General Andrew Bailey sent a “cease and desist” letter on Jan. 29 asking the school district to end its use of “all human sexuality materials and instruction” except in cases where students have parental consent.
According to Bailey’s letter, the school district previously showed students a video presentation that discussed gender identity and sexual orientation. His office sent a copy of the letter to FOX 2, which claims the school district did not notify parents in advance or offer a clear opportunity to opt out of watching the presentation.
“Missouri law requires every school district and charter school to notify each student’s parent or guardian before providing any human sexuality materials or instruction to students,” said Bailey in the letter.
Bailey claims the presentation “represents a direct assault upon parents’ rights” and that parents are able to make decisions about “the kind of human sexuality education” their children receive.
FOX 2 has reached out to the Webster Groves School District for comment on the letter Wednesday, but we have yet to hear back.
According to a report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, an attorney for the school district suggests that Bailey’s claims are inaccurate and that the school district sends out letters explaining its sex education curriculum each year.
