ST. LOUIS – A 35-year-old man was arrested after using construction equipment to destroy the Angel of Harmony statue outside the Cathedral Basilica on Tuesday evening.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department (STLMPD) received a call around 8 p.m. Tuesday evening regarding a man tampering with construction equipment. When they arrived on the scene, they found a boom lift had been dropped onto the Angel of Harmony statue.

As police searched the Central West End, police say they spotted the man, and he took off running, according to STLMPD.

STLMPD says the suspect was arrested a short time later at Euclid and Maryland Avenues after establishing a perimeter and using a K-9 to force the suspect out of hiding. Police also believe that the suspect fired a shot into an unoccupied car.

This is a developing story; Fox 2 will provide more information once it comes into the newsroom.
