EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. – Illinois State Police tell FOX 2 a man and woman are in the hospital in critical condition after they were shot in front of the woman’s five-month-old son on Tuesday afternoon.

The shooting happened just after 1 p.m. in front of Pop’s liquor store on Bond Avenue. A nearby resident, Richard Davis, says he’s tired of the gunfire.

“They’re killing the kids; they’re killing the women; they’re killing older people; the young people. They don’t care who they kill,” Davis said.

Illinois State Police and East St. Louis Police both responded to the scene.

A state police spokesperson said a 29-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were sitting in a car outside the store when another car drove by and the occupants opened fire.

No arrests have been made as of Tuesday evening, and police have not identified any suspects.

The woman’s five-month-old son was also in the car at the time of the shooting. Police said the child was taken to the hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening and are unrelated to the gunfire.

Davis, who lives right across the street from Pop’s, said he wishes police would patrol the area more so families can feel safer walking to the store.

“Our kids are scared to come to the store. I have a 16-year-old. She doesn’t stay out there, but I’m scared to bring her out here because I know at any minute, any moment, you could hear shooting,” Davis said.

He said neighbors are ready to see a change.

“We’re saying, when is this going to stop? We’re saying enough is enough,” he said.

FOX 2 is waiting to learn more from the police on this investigation.
