CHESTERFIELD, Mo. – The 48-year run of the Chesterfield Mall will officially come to an end on Aug. 31. Demolition plans are in the works for the new vision the City of Chesterfield has for the area.
“They want to build a downtown Chesterfield. Apparently, this is the perfect location for it. so we don’t have much of a choice. It’s a big industry coming and taking over,” Iris Vassar, a local, said.
The plans to build a downtown complex consisting of residents, entertainment, retail shops and businesses have been in the works for years.
The movie theatre that sits inside Chesterfield Mall was once busy with customers. Now, everything is up for sale, even down to the popcorn buckets.
Business owner Vince Sweeney is now liquidating all his items in the mall. Customers are coming in to buy AMC movie theatre chairs, mall memorabilia, and other commercial items.
“Going forward, we’re are going to do other things, such as a live auction for more of the fun stuff like Christmas decorations, signs from the mall, memorabilia from the mall,” Sweeney said.
Some businesses are having a hard time finding a new location.
“Real estate, the way it is right now, it’s very hard to find a permanent home in the Chesterfield area. So, while our owner Steve is looking, he just haven’t found anything that’s perfect for us,” Paul Simms, employee of Xtreme Krav Maga St. Louis, said. “We don’t need nothing too big, but we can’t have anything to small either. So he’s looking for the perfect spot.”
The Chesterfield Mall is more than just an establishment for some.
“It’s sad! Its taking a few of my memories with it, a lot of my memories with it,” Mona Frame, customer, said.
The first phase of development for the new vision for this area will be completed roughly around 2027 and will consist of 5 billion square feet.
