ST. LOUIS – Jon Jay, a 2011 World Series champion as an outfielder with the St. Louis Cardinals, will reportedly return to the franchise in a coaching role in 2025.
Jay, 39, has spent the past two seasons as the first-base coach of the Miami Marlins under former Cardinals teammate and coach Skip Schumaker. Both depart from Miami after a major organizational overhaul that culminated with a 100-loss season.
The Cardinals are expected to announce the addition of Jay to their coaching staff later this week. His exact role with the coaching staff remains to be determined.
In 12 big-league seasons as a player, Jon Jay hit .283 and picked up nearly 1,100 hits. He spent six seasons with the Cardinals and also had brief stints with six other teams.
Meanwhile, as Jay returns, Willie McGee is expected step down from his duties as an assistant Cardinals coach and move into a front office advisory.
The Cardinals also have decisions to make on several other coaching and staff jobs, including a new hitting coach, a new assistant general manager, director of player development and more. Some of these decisions could be announced in the upcoming weeks.
