Jefferson County family faces expensive yard repair after landslide causes damage

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. – A family in Jefferson County is left dealing with the aftermath of a landslide from recent heavy rainfall.

“All those honeysuckle bushes and that metal fence post and these cut logs, they were all up in the yard,” Greg Miller said.

Miller came home Saturday and found a new drop off at the edge of his yard.

“There used to be another four feet out beyond the fence that was levelled; that was part of our yard,” he said.

Miller and his family have lived in the house for seven years and have never had issues with the stormwater drain before.

“Jefferson County said that property owners are responsible for anything that happens like this,” he said. “There is no assistance from the county, even though that is not my stormwater drain, and I have no control over what goes into it.”

Repair estimates are costly.

“If I were to do anything about this, I need a permit from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Jefferson County, and that would cost between $20,000 and $50,000 to get that permit and a plan,” Miller said. “Then up to $100,000 to stop it.”

His biggest concern is when the next round of rain will hit.

“I guess I put some tarps up because the cost of the jute netting to try to control the erosion, you can’t get it from Lowes; I have to order it special and wait for that to come in, and who knows if that would be in by Thursday when we’re getting rain next,” Miller said.

FOX 2 News reached out to the Jefferson County Public Works Department and is waiting to hear back.
