ST. LOUIS – A force investigations unit officially closed the case file Friday regarding the deadly 2022 shooting at Central Visual Performing Arts High School, concluding a thorough review of the tragedy.

On Oct. 24, 2022, a 19-year-old gunman, Orlando Harris, killed two people in a shooting at the south St. Louis school. Police later shot and killed Harris, who hurt seven others in the incident. Teacher Jean Kuczka and student Alexzandria Bell died in the shooting.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Monday to discuss a timeline related to the investigation and the release of two relevant records.

Shortly after the tragedy, St. Louis Police Lt. Colonel Michael Sack said the gun used by the shooter had been privately purchased, but taken away by officers days before.

On Oct. 15, 2022, the family of the gunman, identified as Orlando Harris, reported to police that he had acquired an AR-15-style rifle from a private seller after an FBI background check stopped him from buying a weapon from a licensed dealer earlier in October.

The family hoped officers would either seize the weapon or transfer it elsewhere. The gun ended up with a third party, then eventually ended up back in Harris’ hands. Police could not take possession of the weapon at the time due to Missouri’s lack of a red flag law.

Harris was a graduate of CVPA and had no prior criminal history, though family members were reportedly concerned with his mental health before the shooting.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department had previously informed FOX 2 in February that it was preparing to release bodycam video inside CVPA during the shooting, though it’s unclear if or when that may be the case.

During Monday’s news conference, police will also share details on resources available within the St. Louis community. Police Chief Robert Tracy, Mayor Tishaura Jones and other leaders within St. Louis Public Schools and the Department of Public Safety are expected to speak at the news conference.
