ILLINOIS – New Illinois legislation will allow Illinois residents to carry a digital version of their driver’s license come 2025.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker passed the legislation on Friday allowing residents to use mobile versions of driver’s licenses and state IDs on phones while acting in conjunction with a physical card.
The new legislation states that the new technology will not replace physical cards, but will, in hope, improve personal information privacy.
Residents will be given the option of the personal information revealed when ID cards are scanned by a reader.
These controls give residents the option to conceal information like their address when using their ID for things like purchasing alcohol or renting a car.
Illinois is joining 12 other states, such as Missouri, that offer digital forms of identification, while at least 18 other states are working toward implementing the new technology.
The Illinois Secretary of State Office said the new technology will become available in 2025 after completing testing requirements and going through the “highest” standards of security.
