ST. LOUIS – An East St. Louis, Illinois, man is accused of stealing a car at gunpoint in downtown St. Louis last month.

According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department’s probable cause statement, the carjacking took place on Jan. 27 in the 600 block of Locust Street.

Police claim surveillance video shows Abduelah Jones and two others point guns at the victim and steal his 2013 Nissan Sentra.

Jones and his cohorts drove the Sentra back into Illinois, with authorities successfully able to track the stolen vehicle.

An officer in Illinois attempted to pull the vehicle over, but one of Jones’ passengers began shooting at the police vehicle.

The suspects crashed the vehicle and attempted to run away, but Jones was arrested at the scene. Police claim Jones confessed the carjacking and one of the codefendants did too.

The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office charged Jones, 26, with first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. Jones will remain jailed without bond until trial.

Jones has several prior convictions in Illinois and has served time for robbery and burglary, prosecutors said.
