ST. LOUIS – An early sign of spring is the return of hummingbirds throughout Missouri and Illinois.

The bird is expected to make its way to the St. Louis metro area soon.

There have not been any reported sightings of hummingbirds in Missouri, but they have been repeatedly spotted in the southern U.S.

However, red-ruby-throated hummingbirds have been spotted as far north as Memphis.

To prepare a successful hummingbird feeder, the basics, such as food, water, and shelter, are essential. According to Hummingbird Central, trees provide protection, a source of insects for protein, and a resting place between meals.

Many hummingbirds also enjoy using a bird bath with a small waterfall or consistent movement.

Sightings of the birds are expected to be seen in Missouri or Illinois within the next 10 days to two weeks. To learn more about hummingbirds or to submit a sighting, visit Hummingbird Central.
