ST. LOUIS – Torrential rainfall led to widespread flash flooding concerns Tuesday in the St. Louis region, an experience that generated up to seven inches of rain in some spots.

According to the National Weather Service, rainfall was quite significant in the Metro East.

Shiloh, Illinois led the way with a reported 6.85 inches of rainfall.

Nashville (6.59) and Mascoutah (6.35) also received at least six inches of rainfall.

Otterville (5.77) and Waterloo (5.60) also received at least five inches of rainfall.

The impacts were still notable, but generally less and scattered throughout Missouri.

Wildwood, Missouri led the way with a reported 4.1 inches of rainfall

Shrewsbury (3.83), St. Charles (3.81) and Washington (3.65) also received at least three inches of rainfall.

St. Louis Lambert International Airport reported 1.86 inches of rainfall.

This marks the second time in three years that the St. Louis region has dealt with a widespread flash flooding event in July due to heavy rainfall.

The other, which came on July 26, 2022, was described as a 1 in 1,000 weather event on any given year. On that day, around 7.68 inches of rain fell in St. Louis over one six-hour period and nearly a foot of rain slammed St. Peters, Missouri and nearby communities.

For comparison, the maximum reported rainfall from the 2022 event was nearly double that of Tuesday’s event and the airport set a new record in total reported rainfall, which also beats the high in Shiloh, Illinois from Tuesday.

The National Weather Service reports that St. Louis has an annual precipitation around 34 inches each year. That means Tuesday’s rainfall for some parts of Illinois (specifically Shiloh and Nashville) was right around 20% of the normal rainfall both cities would likely see in a given year.

According to climatology data from the National Weather Service, St. Louis usually sees around an average of 3.93 inches of rainfall each year and has already double that total this calendar month alone.
