GRANITE CITY, Ill. — A 48-year-old Granite City man died Monday evening when his vehicle struck an overpass. Robert D. Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn, Wallace was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Traverse southbound on Nameoki Road (State Route 203) at around 6:00 p.m. when his vehicle left the roadway. The car crashed into the West Pontoon Road overpass.
Emergency responders from Granite City police and fire departments arrived quickly. Despite their efforts to free Wallace from the vehicle and provide life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initial findings suggest Wallace died from blunt chest trauma. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Standard toxicology tests will be conducted to check for any substances that might have contributed to the accident.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Irwin Chapel in Granite City.
