MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. – FOX 2 and STL 11 staff will be volunteering on Friday with the Humane Society of Missouri to help care for and comfort pets in need of homes.

This volunteer day is part of our parent company, Nexstar’s, Founder’s Day of Caring. Every year, during the third week of June, all employees across Nexstar’s 117 markets are given paid time off to volunteer at a non-profit organization or public service agency in our local community.

Founder’s Day of Caring was established in 2016 to celebrate the founding of Nexstar in 1996. This Friday marks the company’s 28th anniversary.

FOX 2 and STL 11 will be helping put together adoption packets, put toys together, prepare pet cages, and help assist with other needs at HSMO.

Donations are needed at the shelter, including gently used laundry like bedding, towels and washclothes. Pets are also in need of soft and non-destructible dog and cat toys, puppy pads, tennis balls and mini milk bones. Donations can be dropped off at either their St. Louis City or Maryland Heights shelters.

HSMO has been helping the welfare and well-being of animals since 1870 and works alongside the Animal Cruelty Task Force to help rescue abused animals. The shelter also runs stllostpets.com for those who have lost a pet.

During last year’s Founder’s Day, Nexstar stations across the country served 240 organizations, served over 17,500 volunteer hours, and raised over $26,600 for local non-profit organizations.
