Foul odor in Wood River, nearby Illinois communities under investigation

WOOD RIVER, Ill. – Officials are investigating a foul odor that surfaced Wednesday in Wood River, Illinois and several nearby Metro East communities, though have not yet determined its source.

The Wood River Fire Department responded to a report of an unusual odor around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday near the east side of the city. Fire officials learned of similar odors Wednesday in the municipalities of East Alton, Roxana and South Roxana.

Wood River fire personnel utilized environmental four-gas and natural gas monitors while investigating the odor. Crews did not detect any hazardous readings.

The village of East Alton says utility company Ameren is also assisting with the investigation and doesn’t believe the odor stemmed from a gas leak.

Wood River crews say weather conditions may have led to unusual odors in the municipalities of Alton and Godfrey as well. It’s unclear how much the smell has mitigated in the several impacted communities as of Thursday.

FOX 2 has reached out to the Wood River and East Alton fire chiefs for comment and is awaiting reply on any updates to the odor.
