ST. LOUIS – Former U.S. senator and Missouri First Lady Jean Carnahan has died.
She was appointed to the U.S. Senate after her husband, Mel Carnahan, won the seat in 2000, a month after he died in a plane crash. Jean Carnahan was Missouri’s first female U.S. senator.
Former Senator Claire McCaskill called Carnahan “a wonderful woman,” and former Senator Roy Blunt said she “worked hard for Missouri.” A public celebration of her life is being planned in St. Louis.
Jean Carnahan was 90 years old.
