Former U.S. senator Jean Carnahan dies at age 90

ST. LOUIS – Former U.S. senator and Missouri First Lady Jean Carnahan has died.

She was appointed to the U.S. Senate after her husband, Mel Carnahan, won the seat in 2000, a month after he died in a plane crash. Jean Carnahan was Missouri’s first female U.S. senator.


Illinois bill could mean fewer traffic stops for speeding, other offenses

Former Senator Claire McCaskill called Carnahan “a wonderful woman,” and former Senator Roy Blunt said she “worked hard for Missouri.” A public celebration of her life is being planned in St. Louis.

Jean Carnahan was 90 years old.
